Crew Resource Management (CRM)A lesson in recent helicopter crashes

RHO Aviation can provide you with a unique variation to the typical CRM courses on offer today. Gone are the wide-bodied RPT-centric courses. Sure, Tenerrife was a terrible tragedy from which we can all learn, but when it comes to rotary-wing operations, or supplemental RPT or GA single-
pilot/dual pilot operations, then there are other more relevant case studies that can provide lessons for us.

The RHO Aviation CRM course has been developed using the CASA recommended syllabus but with a twist... It can be adapted not only for aircrew, but for 'mission crew' as well!

Those members of the crew who are not trained as specific aircrew. Police observers, electricity linesmen, paramedics, flight nurses, physicians, members of fire services, forestry, emergency services, the list goes on. But not only that, it should be emphasised that CRM involves the ENTIRE aviation team; aircrew, mission crew, management, maintenance, administration staff, ground support... everyone! As such, the RHO Aviation CRM course is great for all members of the team and is not pitched at just aircrew.

With reference to Human Factors specialists in CASA, our course abides by the requirements of the industry's regulator and maintains the syllabus suggested by it. As well, new modules have been created so as to make your course exactly that which your organisation needs.

With some collusion our course can be made more specific to your organisation's operations. Dispense with those modules that are not applicable and replace them with modules that are.

The RHO Aviation CRM course is full of humour to make such a serious subject easier to take in. It will also be pitched at the appropriate level depending on the audience; a course full of professional aircrew will have different needs than a course full of electricity workers. Both can benefit from CRM, but with differing deliveries aimed at different levels of knowledge and different working environments.

Below is the list of standard CRM Modules and extra modules that have been specially developed for team environments, both within and outside the aviation industry.

  1. Introduction to CRM and the safety culture of the organisation. (This module requires some co-operation with the organisation in order to make it specific to your style of operations.)
  2. The behaviour of the human being.
  3. Limitations to our Performance in our Environment.
  4. Human Error and Error Management.
  5. Communication and Assertiveness.
  6. Teamwork, Leadership and Followership.
  7. Situation Awareness.
  8. Decision Making.
  9. Workload and Automation.
  10. Task Planning, Briefing and De-Briefing.

Choose from such extra modules as:

  1. Low flying hazards and mitigations.
  2. When the pilot in command is not the commander of the mission.
  3. CRM problems with NVGs.
  4. Introduction to Risk Management.
  5. Aerodynamics and other aviation stuff for non-aviators.

The RHO Aviation CRM course is normally run over two days using 10 modules. Some modules can be combined. For example, modules 6 and 12 are complementary and can be combined into one longer module and module 8 can be replaced by, say, module 11 in total.

A CRM Refresher course of one day is available provided the individual has conducted a full course previously.
